October 2016 PTA Meeting Minutes

October 11, 2016 – 6:00 PM

Welcome and Introductions

Principal’s Report

Tie Dye Day was a success

We had the Blues in the Schools performance and the kids really enjoyed it

The Buffalo Wild Wings fundraiser was fun and well attended

Treasurer’s Report

The AIR account balance is just under $7,000.  The general account balance is just over $13,300.  Full budget report.

This is Natalie Cheney’s last year as the Lee PTA treasurer.  She’s looking for someone who might be interested in taking over next year and would like to work with her this year to learn the ropes.  If interested contact Natalie.

We need to do our annual financial review of last year’s books.  This is required by the MO PTA.  We need three people who were not signers on the accounts last year.  Ed Elsea, Becky Fowler, and Megan Hartz volunteered.

ASB Report

At the last ASB meeting, the board reviewed potential revisions to the ASB bylaws.

The ASB is also nominating two Lee parents to the District’s redistricting committee to represent Lee’s interests.  An email went out to all parents from Ed.

The next ASB meeting will be a public meeting and potluck, everyone is encouraged to attend.  The meeting is on October 20 at Lee.

The ASB has integrated their website information into the main Lee School webpage under Family Resources.

Fundraising Committee

We don’t have the numbers back from the Buffalo Wild Wings fundraiser yet, but as soon as they come in we will share with the school community.

We have two upcoming fundraisers:

  • October 28 at Lakota – On the morning of Fall Festival from 6AM – 12PM Lakota will give back 25% of purchases made with the Lee voucher.  All parents, teachers, and community members are encouraged to come in for a drink and a treat to help support Lee.
  • November 7 at Chipotle (Downtown) – 50% of the proceeds will be donated back to Lee for 2nd grade.

The Fall pledge drive is also coming up.  Watch for details in Friday Folders.  If you’re interested in helping contact businesses for donations, please let Megan Hartz know.

Old Business

Grade Level Facebook Pages

We still need volunteers to set up and coordinate a Facebook page for the 1st and 5th grade cohorts.  Natalie Cheney volunteered for 1st grade.  Candy Sall volunteered for 5th grade.

After-School Clubs

We have several clubs underway, but still need ideas for 2nd semester clubs.  If you want to host a club, please send an email to leeartspta@gmail.com.

New Business

Tortoise and the Hare Request (VOTE)

Ed submitted a request to bring the Tortoise and the Hare production to Lee school.  It will be 1 30 minute performance done as an all school assembly.  This will be put on by Talking Horse Productions.  The cost is $250 and would come out of the AIR account.

Approved via verbal vote

Subcontrabass Request (VOTE)

Elizabeth Tummons and Luke Robison requested funding from PTA to purchase an additional subcontrabass drum.  This will be used as part of 4th grade’s performance for MMEA, but it will also be used with all grade levels as part of normal music instruction.

There is $200 in the general PTA budget for musical arts.  This drum will cost $595.

Approved via verbal vote

Emily Arrow Request (VOTE)

Katie Canepa submitted a request to bring Emily Arrow to Lee.  She is a singer/songwriter who adapts children’s picture books into songs.  The whole school recently participated in Scholastic Dot Day which incorporated her songs with activities around the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.

Emily Arrow will be in Columbia and is available on December 7 to be at Lee all day.  Mrs. Canepa is planning on having an upper and a lower grade assembly and some focused time with one grade level.  The total cost for the day is $2230 which includes some supplies for lunch.

After discussion this request was approved via a ballot vote

PTA School of Excellence

This year Lee PTA is participating in the National PTA School of Excellence program.  This is a way for Lee PTA to focus on ways to improve as an organization and more importantly focus on specific goals to improve Lee school.  We will be sending home an anonymous survey to all families to baseline Lee and then will prepare an action plan for improvement in the second half of the year.

District Bond Issue

Last Fall City of Columbia residents approved a new bond issue for Columbia Public Schools.  Part of this bond has been designated to do building renovations at an existing school and Dr. Stiepleman has publicly stated that renovations at Lee are under consideration.

Debbie Rodman attended the last School Board meeting and used the public comment time at the beginning to highlight the great things going on at Lee.  She initiated a discussion with PTA regarding other ways we can engage the board and hopefully influence them towards choosing our school for the renovation.

Some ideas we had are:

  • Having parents and teachers continue to attend School Board meetings to talk about Lee
  • Approaching the Board about having Lee kids perform for them
  • Having District representatives come to an ASB meeting to hold an open forum, we could also combine our PTA and ASB meetings if we could get this scheduled

Family Directory

Debbie Rodman asked if anyone would be interested in creating a Family Directory for Lee. There is software available that can help, but would cost money.  Teachers indicated they would like it because it would help with the politics around playdates and birthday parties.

Next PTA Meeting

The next PTA meeting is scheduled to be held on November 8.  Because that is Election Day, Becky and Megan are considering moving that meeting.  We will look at the calendar and make sure any changes are communicated well in advance.

Calendar Announcements

Picture Retake Day is this Friday at 8:00.  We need 2 parents to volunteer.  Nikki McGruder and Jill Radkowiec signed up.

October 28 – Fall Festival (volunteers needed)

November 7 – Chipotle Fundraiser

Teacher Demonstration – Lego Club Activity

Julie Schisler did a Lego Club activity with parents.  Each table had a bin of legos and each person was tasked with creating an animal.  After 15 minutes we went around the room and shared what we had made.  Amongst the attendees we had an alligator, an ibis, a toucan, a mouse, and a dog as well as several others.
